Orthopedic Surgery

West Toledo Animal Hospital provides orthopedic surgeries for fractures and cruciate ligament repair. Our doctors perform femoral head ostectomy (FHO) to treat and manage hip dysplasia, trauma and disease of the hip. Hip problems are the most common orthopedic disease in dogs, often causing arthritis and pain. FHO surgery removes or ecises the ball of the hip joint. Then the bone is smoothed so there is no bone-to-bone contact between the pelvis and the remaining portion of the femur. Removing part of the femur that works with the hip joint causes a fibrous joint to form.

About Surgery

Just as your doctor would have you get a blood test before undergoing surgery, we offer the same for pets. We recommend preanesthetic blood testing for patients younger than 5 and require it for pets older than 5. The blood test checks the health of organs to ensure your pet's health and safety. Surgery patients younger than 10 get subcutaneous while pets age 10 and older have an IV catheter and fluids for safety and hydration. We use the safest anesthetics available. During surgery, we monitor your pet's heart rate, level of oxygen in the blood and temperature.

Proactive Pain Management

Your pet will receive medication to control pain before, during and after any procedure that may cause discomfort. Our doctors have been trained in the latest pain-management techniques and seek ongoing continuing education.
